A short history of Bonita Beach

Bonita Beach is located along Little Hickory Island in the coastal section of Bonita Springs. The surrounding community was originally known as Survey after an Army Corps of Engineers camp established near the Imperial River during the 1870s. Developers later renamed the area Bonita Springs, and the completion of the Tamiami Trail in 1928 encouraged growth and tourism. Bonita Springs officially incorporated as a city in 1999.

Major storms affecting Bonita Beach include Hurricane Donna in 1960, Charley in 2004, Wilma in 2005, Irma in 2017, Ian in 2022, and Milton in 2024. Ian was the most destructive, producing more than 12 feet of storm surge in portions of Bonita Springs and causing widespread damage along Bonita Beach.
